Malwa sultans built a formidable medieval city of Mandu complete with pleasure palaces, gardens, hammams, mosques, monumental congregational halls, madrasas, tombs and caravanserais. The Group of Monuments at Mandu is composed of seven architectural ensembles that are ensconced within its fortifications. The Royal Enclave, Ceremonial Group, Darya Khan’s complex, Sagar Talav complex and Rewa Kund complex along with the network of water bodies and fortifications, create the magnificent medieval urban ensemble of Mandu, supporting the necessary attributes of the Serial Nomination. The outstanding water systems at Mandu are amongst the most expansive systems of water conservation and distribution surviving from the medieval world consisting of an elaborate network of lakes, reservoirs, step wells (baolis), wells and tanks for collecting ground water and harvesting rainwater in this rocky terrain.
