15th Century Chhamba Lakhang, Maitreya Buddha Temple
The project entailed the conservation of a 15th century temple listed among the 100 Endangered Sites in the World, in the rough terrain of Ladakh. The project work carried out over 3 years was implemented by the villagers of Basgo and involved conservation of a 15th century earthen structure with the use of traditional building and crafts technique. The project entailed stabilization of the earth walls and timber beams, restoration of medieval murals, traditional waterproofing of ‘bhojpatra’ and mud terracing and won the top UNESCO Asia Pacific Award, setting a benchmark in conservation for the region.
